Maths in our Federation
We believe that every child is a mathematician. Our maths curriculum is designed to ensure all pupils become confident, articulate, and capable problem-solvers who understand the value of maths in everyday life. Through a carefully structured programme of learning, children develop a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts from Reception to Year 6.
Throughout our maths journey, we embed our school's Gem Threads, encouraging resilience, collaboration, independence, and reflective learning. These values underpin everything we do in mathematics and beyond.
Our teaching is rooted in the National Curriculum, with lessons structured around the White Rose Maths scheme, which breaks content into small, manageable steps. Each session begins with starter questions to revisit prior learning and feed into the new concept being introduced. Lessons are progressively built, with each one connecting to the next to ensure solid understanding.
Children are actively involved in their learning journey. Through regular feedback and marking, they help identify misconceptions before progressing, allowing for a personalised and responsive teaching approach.
We focus on both mathematical fluency and the application of skills. Every unit is carefully mapped out to ensure pupils not only learn procedures, but also understand when and why to use them. By the end of each year, children are equipped with a toolkit of strategies to tackle increasingly complex problems with confidence.
Vocabulary is key. Each lesson highlights the mathematical language children need to talk confidently about their learning. Key vocabulary and stem sentences help children verbalise their understanding and solidify key concepts.
We use a range of manipulatives, visual models, and real-life examples to help children build understanding from the ground up. This hands-on, experience-rich approach allows children to "see the maths" and apply it meaningfully, while also recognising common misconceptions and how to overcome them.
Children engage in a wide range of topics including place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, shape, measurement, statistics, and more. In Early Years and Key Stage 1, pupils develop strong number sense and visual understanding. As they move through the school, they explore more abstract thinking and reasoning, always supported by high-quality teaching and resources.
To see detailed progression, our curriculum is broken down into units and small steps, which build year-on-year to ensure clarity and continuity. Topics are revisited and extended over time, deepening understanding and reinforcing knowledge.
Maths is assessed formatively in every lesson. At the end of each unit, children complete an assessment which is analysed in detail. This analysis feeds into planning and supports intervention for pupils who need additional help. Our maths leader monitors progress across the school through learning walks, book looks, pupil conferencing and data review. Each term, children are assessed against National Curriculum objectives to track and celebrate their progress.
Through this structured and supportive approach, our children receive a high-quality mathematics education and leave us with the confidence and curiosity to take on mathematical challenges in the wider world.
