Promoting British Values at Our School

In our Federation, we are proud to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. these values are not taught in isolation, but are part of a thread that runs throughout our entire curriculum, preparing our pupils to become responsible and respectful citizens in our diverse society.

How We Promote British Values

  • Democracy
Pupils are encouraged to have a voice and contribute to decisions that shape their school experience. Through initiatives like School Council elections, sports, well-being and reading ambassadors, class discussions, and pupil surveys, we teach children the importance of fairness, debate, and making their voices heard.

During History, we look at different leaders and leadership systems to better discuss and understand their influence on local, British and international historical periods of time.

In English, we hold debates on several topics which give children the opportunity to influence the opinions of others and use a democratic process to express their views.

Children, parents and staff and all other stakeholders have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. Democracy is central to our school.

Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard.

Subject leaders often ask children to share their voice and experiences about their learning.

Parents’ opinions are welcomed through methods such as questionnaires, parent’s evenings and opportunities to comment on whole school matters when they arise.

  • The Rule of Law
This is taught to children through school and class rules with clear rewards and consequences set out in our Behaviour Policy.

Clear rules and expectations guide our school community, fostering an understanding of why laws are important to protect rights and promote fairness.

Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken. These values are reinforced in different ways:

Ø Visits from authorities such as the police and fire service

Ø Bikeability lessons enable children to understand the rules of the road and the potential dangers encountered should they break those rules.

Ø During Religion & World View lessons, when rules for particular faiths are thought about

Ø During other school subjects, where there is respect and appreciation for different rules

  • Individual Liberty
We encourage pupils to make responsible choices, explore their interests, and express their individuality within a safe and supportive environment. By teaching about personal rights and freedoms, and how to exercise them responsibly, children develop confidence and independence.

  • Mutual Respect
Kindness and respect is a core value at our school and one of 3 rules. We foster an inclusive environment where all members of the community feel valued. Pupils are taught to appreciate different perspectives, work collaboratively, and build positive relationships with others.
  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Through our curriculum, assemblies, and community events, pupils learn about and celebrate cultural diversity. By fostering understanding and empathy, we equip children to embrace differences and develop open-mindedness toward all faiths, beliefs, and lifestyles.

Our commitment to British values aligns with our school ethos of “All different—all equal” and ensures every child is well-prepared for life in modern Britain. We believe in creating a learning environment that respects and celebrates diversity while nurturing the knowledge, skills, and values needed to thrive in our global community.
